Northern Virginia, or NOVA as it is affectionately known, is a vibrant mix of history, culture, restaurants, and shopping. Although he became governor of Virginia in July of 1677, Lord Fairfax seemed more interested in preserving his lands in the northern neck of Virginia than in governing. The Smithsonian museums also serve as local cultural institutions and are conveniently close to Northern Virginia, and the Udvar-Hazy Center at the Chantilly National Air and Space Museum is also popular. Stafford County is one of seven counties in the United States where black households earn more than white households. As a result of the formation of West Virginia, part of Lord Fairfax's colonial grant that defined Northern Virginia was ceded when that state was established in 1863. It is home to the Northern Virginia Swimming League, which comprises 102 community pools, and NVSL-Dive which is comprised of 47 teams in Fairfax and Arlington counties. In these three elections for state office, the accumulated margins in Northern Virginia provided the Democratic candidate with a margin of victory.
Although Northern Virginia contains a large portion of the ALS population, there are only a few colleges and universities in the region. The federal government is one of the main employers in Northern Virginia, which is home to numerous government agencies; these include the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency and the Pentagon (headquarters of the Department of Defense), as well as Fort Myer, Fort Belvoir, Marine Corps Quantum Base, FBI Academy, DEA Academy, Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS), United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and United States Geological Survey (USGS).Northern Virginia offers a plethora of activities for visitors to explore.
